About Us
TOM: UPitt is the University of Pittsburgh student chapter of Tikkun Olam Makers (TOM) Global, a 501 (c)(3) organization. Our mission is to create solutions to neglected challenges, including the needs of people with disabilities, the elderly, and veterans. We believe that this can only be achieved with four Pillars of Purpose: Inclusion, Interdisciplinary, Innovation, and Accesibility. TOM: UPitt’s purpose is to connect members of our community of Pittsburgh with a personal knowledge of a disability to the skilled members of out Pitt community to create custom solutions. We prioritize giving a space to people with disabilities to express personal challenges that don’t have an existing affordable solution and foster the abundance of skills within our university community to listen and design for this specific challenges. Following the TOM Global motto of “Help one, help many”, all of the solutions are place on an online open-source platform, to be accessible to communities and the general public around the world. TOM: UPitt seeks to empower our student chapter and members to foster inclusion and innovation centered on accessible design through outreach, community engagement, professional development, and collaborative design. This shall be accomplished through, but not limited to education, volunteer opportunities, and Make-A-Thon events. TOM: UPitt seeks to connect its local community members to the global network of the TOM Global organization and present different types of networking and career opportunities centered on accessible design.
