Our Purpose

Our name is more than Greek letters. “Women in Technical Studies” was kept as part of the name to insure that we remember that our purpose is dual. “Alpha Sigma Kappa” represents our social side, while “Women in Technical Studies” recognizes our goal of academic achievement.

STEM Drop-Out Disparity

Nowadays, statistics show that an even number of men and women will pursue higher education, and in non-STEM fields, the drop out rates are similar for these demographics. However, statistics show that women and minorities in STEM are 23% more likely to abandon their studies. This gap increases significantly as well for people of color and students with disabilities.

Closing the Gap

The clear disparity in retention rates in STEM fields can often be attributed to a lack of support and mentoring, along with feelings of isolation and self-doubt. Thankfully, research has shown that learning communities aimed at supporting women and minorities in STEM majors can significantly improve academic performance and increase credit completion.

Empowered by Siblinghood

Alpha Sigma Kappa - Women in Technical Studies provides an unique environment as a social sorority with an academic focus; our members are committed to supporting one another in every way, from academics to personal matters, as well as extending our support through service and leadership to our wider Pitt and Greek community.

Our Values

Promote Friendship

Our members make a life-long commitment to maintain the bond of siblinghood and support each other in every way. More than friends, Alpha Sigma Kappa is a family, aiming to challenge and uplift one another, not just in academics, but in our personal lives as well.

Promote Academic Achievement

Academic achievement is not a requirement, but a goal that all of our members share. We support one another by hosting study sessions, leadership, career, and academic development workshops, and providing our members with resources to succeed in their academic goals.

Unity Within the Organization

Alpha Sigma Kappa is a national organization, with siblings all over the globe, and we try to connect and maintain relationships with other chapters as much as possible.

Philanthropy Throughout the Community

We aim to promote a culture of service and philanthropy by participating in Pitt's Signature Days of Service, Pitt Dance Marathon, as well as raising funds for local classrooms in need through our national philanthropy Donor's Choose.
